Welcome to the website of the Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety and Energy Technology UMSICHT in Oberhausen, Germany.

Fraunhofer UMSICHT develops and optimizes processes in the fields of environmental-, process-, material- and energy technology with the aim to promote environmentally-friendly technologies and innovative approaches. The institute sustains its position within the research landscape with the key research areas "biorefinery - products from renewable resources", "matfunc - particles, materials and membranes with functionality", "modular energy technologies - flexible solutions for sustainable energy systems" and "information networks for process and energy technology - utilizing dispersed knowledge in value-added chains". Fraunhofer UMSICHT offers competency from the first project idea through the preparation of applications

and acquisition of funding up to development and market introduction and thus helps its clients to secure a competitive advantage and opens up international markets for them.

Within the framework of the study "Thin Clients 2011 - Ecological and economical aspects of virtual desktops" Fraunhofer UMSICHT has examined the energy-saving potential of IT infrastructures based on thin clients with virtualized terminal servers and desktop virtualization in productive operation. PC and thin client devices are compared for two exemplary installations. In this comparison the production, manufacturing, distribution, use and disposal phase were taken into consideration.
